A Sacred Act of Worship Unto God

This reference guide is provided to the members of Whitehead Cathedral Church of God in Christ to explain the purpose, meaning, and practice of the First Fruits Offering. This offering is a sacred act of worship unto God and is being introduced to prepare the congregation for our upcoming First Fruit Sunday.

The First Fruits Offering is a sacred and voluntary act of worship. It is an opportunity for believers to honor the Lord with the first and best of what He has blessed them with — given as an expression of faith, obedience, gratitude, and trust in Him.

There is no required amount. Each member is encouraged to seek the Lord in prayer and give as He leads.

Rooted in Scripture

Leviticus 23:9–13 establishes the principle of First Fruits as an act of reverence, obedience, and faith. God instructed His people to bring the first portion of their harvest to Him, trusting that He would bless what followed.

The Hebrew word bikkurim means "promise to come." Our harvest today may come in the form of income, employment, promotions, bonuses, refunds, or other blessings. Genesis 4:3–5 teaches the difference between offering what honors God first — as Abel did — versus offering what remains after meeting our own needs.

Giving your First Fruits means placing God first. It reflects trust in Him and acknowledges Him as the source of every blessing.

Understanding the Difference

Tithes are given regularly throughout the year as an act of obedience — a consistent, ongoing commitment to God.

First Fruits are a separate, annual offering given unto God as an act of worship — a singular, intentional presentation of your firstfruits to the Lord.

"The first belongs to God. What follows is blessed."

Both reflect a heart surrendered to God, but the First Fruits Offering is uniquely set apart — a special moment of collective worship as a congregation.

Suggested Prayerful Savings Examples
